Stress is a bit like the weather. Everybody is interested in it; it is a good topic for conversation, yet very few people understand it.
One woman can thoroughly enjoy leaping to her feet at some council meeting or proposing a toast, while for others, just the thought of speaking in public will worry them for weeks.
For one man promotion is welcomed as a challenge, and not at all stressful. For another it is so loaded in stress it reflects in bad work performance, bad personal relationships and even a bad temper.
At the end of the day, you cannot escape stress! Stress is inherent in every life form. It is the force exerted by one thing against another. Stress is and always will be, part of being alive.
From the day we are born, we are under stress. Certain situations are inevitable – people die, get ill, have accidents or lose their jobs.
There are other forms of stress we subject ourselves to, to fulfil our needs. Some of these things may even be pleasant – like getting married, having a baby or organising a party.
This means that sometimes stress does us a good turn. It helps us win at things, give a good account of ourselves and even helps us look good. At these times adrenaline courses through the veins, widens the eyes and gives us that extra zip. That is the stress of the joy of being alive.
It is said that stress is the number one problem in our society today. This is not quite correct. Stress is necessary. Without stress nothing would be accomplished. We need a challenge, which takes us out of a state of equilibrium.
With normal stress, the overall physiological equilibrium is maintained. We are not concerned with such essential stress or tension, but with the undesirable excess tension that threatens the body’s wellbeing.
When we pile on optional stresses bit by bit, taking on extra strains it can have tragic results. Most of us are capable of bearing these added responsibilities for a limited period of time but their unconsidered continuation is dangerous.
